How to Bring Your Smart Home Outdoors

Did you know your smart home extends beyond the interior walls of your living space?

Most smart devices require only a Bluetooth or wifi connection and can be conveniently controlled through an app on your smartphone. Some devices can also be integrated with a smart speaker/home personal assistants, such as Amazon Echo, Google Nest, and Apple’s HomePod. Whether you’re planning a small get-together or just craving the sounds and smells of nature, bring these smart gadgets outside and enjoy the outdoors like never before.

Smart Outdoor Lights and Bulbs

Your options are no longer limited to conventional  string lights, tiki torches, or harsh directional spotlights when you spend an evening on your deck or patio. Smart lighting is already used by many for home security, with pathway lights that can detect motion.

If you’re looking to create ambience on your deck or patio, there are bulbs that can safely be used outside, can change colors to set the mood, and are operated by communicating with a hub or gateway.

All smart bulbs are LED, and last much longer than traditional incandescent bulbs or even regular LED bulbs. Given that they can last as long as 20 years or more, it makes sense that they are a more expensive option.

Smart Plugs

It won’t be long before the weather starts to get a little chilly, but that’s no reason you need to stay indoors. You can operate a space heater by connecting it to a smart plug and controlling it directly through an app on your phone.

But even more the temperatures begin to dip, you can use smart plugs to power  and automate landscape features like fountains, outdoor grills or ovens, and garden lighting. Because the plug is “smart” you can schedule the devices to turn on and off according to your preferences, which can save energy and decrease your bills.

Most smart pubs require only a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection and are very easy to set up. You can control them either through an app or via home assistant voice commands. The plugs designed for outdoor use can handle all kinds of weather conditions, including rain, heat, and humidity. They’re not waterproof – only water resistant – but most come with covers that will protect the internal wiring.

By the time December arrives, you could be enjoying the holiday from your deck – complete with smart plug-operated space heaters and Christmas lights.

Smart Speakers

We’re not talking about Alexa, although with some of these speakers you can summon her to change the playlist. Yes, this is about music and how you can enjoy your favorite songs outside in a way that’s safe from most weather conditions.

But aside from being weather-resistant, these speakers are also able to deliver excellent quality sound and are powerful enough to be heard amidst the outside noise.

Most outdoor smart speakers are bluetooth or Wi-Fi enabled, and you can easily control the volume or advance to the next tune through an app on your smartphone.

Smart Outdoor Protection From the Elements

Don’t let rain or wind keep you from enjoying your deck or patio. Shade Outdoor Living Solutions offers retractable screens that can be adjusted with a touch of a button. These are not ordinary automatic screens, but are able to withstand winds of up to 85 miles per hour. They’re also impact-resistant because they use rope instead of fragile zippers to withstand force. They’re also safer than other retractable screens because they don’t have a heavy weighted bar at the bottom —  the perfect way to make outdoor living easier and more convenient.
